About four kilometres west of Limburg, just across the border in Rhineland-Palatinate at the edge of Diez, Schloss Oranienstein is a Baroque palace built between 1672 and 1684 by Albertine Agnes, daughter of Frederick Henry of Orange. It was one of the ancestral seats of the House of Orange-Nassau and remains symbolically important to the Dutch royal family, who still send representatives on state occasions.
The interior features painted ceilings, stuccoed reception rooms and an Orange Museum that tells the story of the Nassau-Orange dynasty and its links to the Netherlands. The building is currently used by the German army, but guided tours run regularly and are the only way to see the state rooms.
