Fischmarkt sits between the cathedral and the river, where the fish caught in the Lahn were once sold. The square is small but graced by some of the best-preserved late-Gothic houses in the city, with carved beams and overhanging upper storeys. The 18th-century Marktbrunnen fountain in the middle was the main water source for this corner of the Altstadt.
Most of the houses are now private homes or small shops. From here, the alley Fischgasse drops down to the river and the Alte Lahnbrücke.
