Lottehaus

Childhood home of Charlotte Buff — the real Lotte of Goethe's "Werther"

Charlotte Buff lived in this handsome 17th-century house — formally the Deutschordenshof, headquarters of the Teutonic Order in Wetzlar — where her father was the local steward. Several rooms have been kept as a small but evocative literary museum: Lotte's bedchamber, the salon, period objects, manuscripts, and a wall of Werther editions in 30-odd languages.

The museum is unmissable if Werther means anything to you, and quietly interesting if it doesn't — it captures the way one short novel reshaped European Romanticism. Closed Mondays.

A story
Goethe met Charlotte Buff in the summer of 1772 at a country ball. She was already engaged to Johann Christian Kestner, a colleague at the imperial court. The infatuation that followed went nowhere, Goethe left town in despair, and two years later turned the whole episode into a 100-page novel that made him famous across Europe overnight.
