Gildehaus Reformed Church

The Reformed church in nearby Gildehaus — technically part of the Bad Bentheim municipality — is notable for its detached tower, which stands some distance from the main church building. Local legend, preserved with the seriousness that German village folklore often manages, holds that the devil tossed the tower away from the church when the pealing bells disturbed his rest. The more prosaic explanation involves soil conditions and structural history, but the story is better.

The church itself is a modest Reformation-era building that has served the local Reformed congregation since the sixteenth century, reflecting the region's historical ties to Calvinist Netherlands across the nearby border. The combination of Dutch ecclesiastical culture and German landscape gives this corner of Lower Saxony a distinct character that the church embodies well.
