Seabird Colony

The western dunes of Langeoog host one of the largest seabird colonies on the East Frisian Islands, with lesser black-backed gulls, herring gulls, sandwich terns, and several wader species nesting in the dune heath from spring through early summer. Access to the core breeding areas is restricted during the nesting season to protect the birds, but the colony is visible — and very audible — from the paths along the dune edge.

The restricted zones are marked and should be respected; wardens are present during the peak season. Walking the path that runs along the outside of the protected area in May and June, you are close enough to watch the birds without disturbing them. Bring binoculars.

A story
Langeoog's lesser black-backed gull colony is one of the largest in Germany, with thousands of pairs nesting in the western dune belt each spring. The birds arrive from their West African wintering grounds in March and depart again by September, and during peak breeding season in May and June the western end of the island fills with sound that can be heard from the village.
