Eating Out

The village has a reasonable concentration of restaurants, cafes, and ice cream shops for its size, catering mainly to the family holiday crowd. North Sea fish — plaice, sole, herring, and the local shrimp (Krabben) — appear on most menus, and Krabbenbrötchen (shrimp sandwiches) are the obligatory beach snack.

The island's bakeries open early and are worth seeking out for Frisian bread and pastries. Several restaurants offer Frisian afternoon tea (Teezeremonie), a Low German tradition involving strong tea poured over rock sugar, stirred with a special spoon, and accompanied by whipped cream — unusual and worth trying once.
