Schloppsee

The Schloppsee is a small freshwater lake tucked into the dune belt east of the village, reached by a pleasant walk through the national park. It is about 150 by 200 metres, surprisingly deep for its size — up to 12 metres in places — and surrounded by reeds and low dune scrub that make it feel hidden even when you are standing at its edge.

Swimming is permitted and popular in summer. The lake is also a habitat for amphibians and waterfowl, and the path to it passes through some of the best dune heath on the island. Birdwatchers should walk quietly — the surrounding area holds breeding populations of several wader and passerine species.

A story
The Schloppsee is a so-called "dune slack lake" — formed where the water table intersects a low-lying hollow between sand dunes. Such lakes are ecologically unusual because their water level tracks the tides, rising and falling slightly even though the lake has no direct connection to the sea. The Schloppsee is one of the best examples of this phenomenon on the East Frisian Islands.
