Water Tower (Wasserturm)

The red-brick water tower is Langeoog's most recognisable landmark, rising above the dune belt near the village with views across the entire island and out over the Wadden Sea. It has been a public viewpoint for decades, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the North Frisian Islands to the east.

The tower is accessible for climbing and the view from the top tells you everything about Langeoog's geography: the narrow strip of settlement in the middle, the broad north beach, the mudflats and tidal channels of the south side, and the sea in every direction. The surrounding area of Kaapdüne — the dune nearest the village — is a pleasant walking zone.

A story
Langeoog's water tower was built in 1909 and served as the island's only source of pressurised fresh water until the mid-20th century. The tower survived both World Wars intact and was converted into a visitor viewpoint in the 1970s — it remains the tallest structure on the island and the one landmark visible from almost everywhere.
