Conversationshaus

The grandest building in Norderney town, the Conversationshaus is a handsome 19th-century assembly hall that served as the social centre of the island's resort life for over a century. Today it hosts concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions, and events throughout the year — it is worth checking the programme before your visit.

The building sits on the main promenade behind the beach and is hard to miss. The interior retains its period character, with a concert hall and smaller salons. Even if you don't catch a performance, the exterior and setting give a good sense of what Norderney looked like at its elegant resort peak.

A story
The Conversationshaus was the social hub of 19th-century Norderney resort life. Theodor Fontane visited in 1854 and wrote about the parade of Prussian nobility that gathered here each summer. Otto von Bismarck came repeatedly. Kaiser Wilhelm II made Norderney his summer court in the 1890s, and the Conversationshaus was where diplomatic conversations happened over morning coffee between sea bathing sessions.
