Weisse Düne (White Dune)

At the eastern end of Norderney, where the island narrows and the nature reserve takes over completely, the Weisse Düne rises above the surrounding dune landscape in a sweep of pale sand. It is the island's most dramatic natural feature and worth cycling the full length of the island to reach.

The area around the White Dune is largely free of tourist infrastructure — no cafes, no Strandkorb rental, just the dunes, the wind, and the sea on both sides. The beach here is longer and emptier than near the town. Walking trails through the dune reserve are marked; stay on them to protect the fragile vegetation.

A story
The White Dune at Norderney's eastern end is the highest point of the East Frisian Islands — all of 32 metres above sea level. From the top on a clear day you can see across to the Wadden Sea mudflats on the south and the open North Sea on the north, plus the outline of neighbouring islands in both directions.
