West Tower (New Lighthouse)

The West Tower (Westturm) stands at the western end of the island, where the original lighthouse used to be before the island's slow eastward drift made the old position obsolete. Built in 1969, it now fulfills the navigational function that the Old Lighthouse can no longer perform from its central position. The tower is not open to visitors but its position at the far western end of the island makes the walk there worthwhile.

The western end of Wangerooge is the wildest and least developed part of the island — dunes, beach, and the sound of the North Sea with no village infrastructure. Walking from the village to the West Tower and back along the beach (about 8 kilometres round trip) gives a sense of the island's full length and the experience of complete solitude rarely found on a popular summer destination. Take water; there is nothing at the western end.

A story
The West Tower was built in 1969 at the western tip of Wangerooge to replace the navigational function of the Old Lighthouse, which had drifted to the island's centre due to centuries of eastward migration. The fact that an island moves so far in a human lifetime that its lighthouse needs replacing is the kind of geological drama that is easy to miss if you're not looking for it.
