Wangerooge offers the pleasures of the East Frisian Islands in concentrated form: a broad North Sea beach, Wadden Sea mudflat walks, birdwatching, cycling on flat paths, and the specific pleasure of being somewhere genuinely car-free. There is not much to do in the conventional tourist sense, which is the point. The island is small enough to walk end to end in a couple of hours, and the rhythm of the tides sets the pace.
