Albanifriedhof

Old cemetery just outside the city walls — burial place of Gauss and the Brothers Grimm

The Albanifriedhof, just outside the line of the medieval wall to the southeast, dates from the late 18th century. The university used it for several centuries as the burial place of professors and prominent townspeople, and the list of names on the headstones is a roll-call of German science and letters: Gauss, the chemist Friedrich Wöhler, the orientalist Heinrich Ewald, and Wilhelm Grimm of the Brothers Grimm.

It is a small, walled, well-kept cemetery and a quiet place to spend half an hour. The university has a printed walking guide identifying the most notable graves.

A story
Carl Friedrich Gauss, the 'prince of mathematicians', is buried here under a modest stone — at his own request, with no inscription beyond his name and dates. The Brothers Grimm both lived in Göttingen as professors and Wilhelm Grimm is also buried in the cemetery. A quiet, leafy place that has held more than its share of the world's intellectual history.
