Altes Rathaus

Late-Gothic former town hall on the market square

The Altes Rathaus, the old town hall, dominates the south side of the market square. The current building dates from the late 14th century, with the great hall on the ground floor — high vaults, stone columns, late-medieval murals added in the 1880s — open to the public outside official events. From its steps, the goose girl, the tower of the Johanniskirche, and the cluster of timber-framed houses around the square are all in view.

The building has not served as the town hall since 1978, when council moved to a modern building outside the centre. Today the upper rooms house the tourist office.
