Göttinger Stadtwald

Beech and oak forest on the hills east of the city

The Stadtwald — the city forest — covers the hills east of the centre, an unbroken stretch of mature beech and oak crossed by signed walking paths and forest roads. The Hainberg, the Bismarckturm viewpoint, and the Kehr restaurant in the woods are easy targets from the Altstadt, half an hour to an hour each. It is one of the things that makes Göttingen pleasant to live in: serious forest, ten minutes from the market square.

The Mariaspring beer garden in the woods south of the city is the traditional student afternoon outing on a fine day.
