Hochzeitshaus (Wedding House)

A grand civic building with a mechanical glockenspiel and the outdoor Pied Piper play

The Hochzeitshaus is one of the grandest buildings of the Weser Renaissance, built between 1610 and 1617 as a civic hall and celebrations venue. Its distinctive three-gabled facade with alternating triangular and curved pediments is one of the defining images of Hameln. The carillon in the tower plays three times a day (at 9:35am, 1:05pm, and 5:35pm), and at 1:05pm mechanical figures from the Pied Piper legend emerge from the facade — a later addition that now draws crowds to Market Square.

The outdoor Pied Piper play performed on the building's terrace every Sunday from May to September is the main summer attraction in Hameln. Local actors in costume retell the legend in a half-hour performance that is free to watch. It starts at noon.

A story
The name "Wedding House" comes from its original function as a venue for civic celebrations, including marriages. Today the terrace in front of it hosts the Pied Piper open-air play every Sunday from May through September — a tradition that has been running since 1959. Actors in medieval costume retell the legend to an audience sitting on the steps of the Market Square. It runs at noon and lasts about half an hour.
