Market Square

The central square flanked by Renaissance buildings and the scene of the Sunday Pied Piper play

Hameln's Market Square is the heart of the old town, flanked by the Hochzeitshaus and surrounded by other Weser Renaissance buildings. The square comes alive on Sunday mornings from May to September when the outdoor Pied Piper play draws visitors to the Hochzeitshaus terrace. On other days it functions as a regular market square with a weekly farmers' market and a pleasant cafe and restaurant scene.

The square is at its most photogenic in the late afternoon when the sun comes around to the west and catches the carved stone facades. The combination of buildings around the square — the Hochzeitshaus, the Rattenfängerhaus on adjacent Osterstrasse, and the Marktkirche (market church) — represents the most concentrated collection of significant Weser Renaissance buildings anywhere.
