The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg opened in 1994 and has become one of the more interesting contemporary art venues in northern Germany. The building is a tall glass-and-stone hall with a 16-metre-high central gallery space that suits very large-scale installations — Rebecca Horn, James Turrell, Olafur Eliasson have all worked here.
The permanent collection is modest; the museum lives off its temporary exhibitions, which range across painting, photography, sculpture, and design. It is worth checking the current programme before you arrive — if anything in the schedule appeals to you, it is reason enough to detour to Wolfsburg.
