The Zoologischer Garten Schwerin sits on the northern shore of the Schweriner See, about three kilometres from the city centre. It is a compact zoo by German standards — around 800 animals across 130 species — but well maintained and particularly strong on big cats, primates, and birds of prey. The lakeside setting gives it a pleasant, uncrowded feel that larger zoos cannot match.
The zoo makes a good half-day excursion, especially for families. Reach it by bus from the city centre or cycle along the lake path from the castle gardens. Entry is reasonably priced by German standards.
