Altena is a small industrial town in the Märkisches Sauerland whose main attraction — the medieval Burg Altena — is genuinely worth the journey. The castle sits high above the Lenne valley and combines a youth hostel museum, a regional history museum, and dramatic views. Beyond the castle, the forested hills of the Sauerland offer good walking.
