Bayenturm is a sturdy medieval tower on Cologne's Rhine side, surviving from the old city fortifications. Its heavy stone presence is a useful corrective to the idea that Cologne's history is only cathedral spires, Roman remains, and post-war reconstruction.
The tower works well on a riverside walk south of the old town. It gives that stretch a historic anchor, and its scale helps you imagine the defensive city that once controlled movement along the Rhine.
