Tiger & Turtle — Magic Mountain

Tiger & Turtle — Magic Mountain is a walkable sculpture in the form of a roller coaster that sits atop a former coal-slag heap in the south of Duisburg. The structure is 21 metres high, 220 metres long, and entirely climbable — you walk along the track, up and over the hills and curves, including through a section that loops overhead. The only part you cannot walk is the actual loop itself, which is accessible as a viewing platform but not traversable on foot for obvious physics-related reasons.

The view from the top of the slag heap takes in the Rhine, the industrial landscape of the Ruhr, and on clear days the distant outline of the Cologne Cathedral. At night the structure is illuminated and visible from considerable distance. It is free to access and makes a fine complement to Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord — both are examples of the Ruhr's creative approach to its industrial legacy.

A story
Tiger & Turtle was created by the artists Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth and installed in 2011 on the slag heap above Angerpark in Duisburg-Angerhausen. It was built as public art for the European Capital of Culture year and has since become one of the most photographed structures in the Ruhr. You can walk its entire 220-metre length — except for the loop, which is roped off as a viewing platform only.
