The Goethe Museum occupies Schloss Jägerhof, a graceful Baroque hunting palace at the north end of the Hofgarten. The collection focuses on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's life and work — manuscripts, first editions, portraits, and personal objects — and is one of the more intimate literary museums in Germany.
Despite the name, Goethe himself never lived in Düsseldorf, but the city has strong connections to his circle. The poet Heinrich Heine was born here, and Goethe visited the Rhine region several times. The museum is a good size for an hour's visit, and the palace setting in the Hofgarten makes the approach as pleasant as the exhibition itself.
