The K20 on Grabbeplatz is the main modern art museum of North Rhine-Westphalia and one of the finest collections in Germany. The permanent collection is anchored by an exceptional holding of Paul Klee — around 100 works, one of the most significant Klee collections anywhere — alongside major pieces by Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, and the German Expressionists.
The post-war rooms are outstanding: Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, and Sigmar Polke are all represented in depth. The Düsseldorf Academy tradition of the 1960s and 1970s — which made the city one of the most important centres of contemporary art in the world — is documented here better than anywhere else. The building itself, a 1986 granite-clad cube by the Danish architects Dissing + Weitling, sits on Grabbeplatz in the Altstadt.
