Wewelsburg is a Renaissance castle near Paderborn with an unusually dark twentieth-century history. Heinrich Himmler attempted to turn it into an ideological centre for the SS, and that legacy is now confronted in a serious documentation museum.
The architecture alone would make it a worthwhile regional castle, but the exhibition is the reason to go. It is sober, direct, and important for understanding how myth, power, and violence were staged by the Nazi regime.
