Propsteikirche St. Peter

The Propsteikirche St. Peter is the main Catholic church of Recklinghausen and the oldest significant building in the city, with origins in the medieval period. It stands on Kirchplatz directly across from the Ikonen-Museum — the juxtaposition of Orthodox icons and a Gothic Catholic church is one of those happy accidents that makes visiting both feel like a meditation on Christianity's divergent paths.

The church was substantially rebuilt and altered over the centuries, and what you see today is a mixture of Gothic structure and later additions. The interior has the quiet, dimly lit quality typical of older German Catholic churches, with good stained glass and an organ that still gets serious use. Worth stepping inside even for a few minutes when visiting the Ikonen-Museum next door.
