Winterberg Ski Area

The Skiliftkarussell Winterberg is the largest ski resort in western Germany, with around 23 lifts and slopes totalling roughly 40 kilometres. The terrain is not demanding by Alpine standards — most runs are red or blue — but the snow quality is often good and the infrastructure is modern. Après-ski culture is taken seriously here, and the resort attracts a young, boisterous crowd from the Ruhr cities.

The resort is also worth considering for families — the gentle terrain suits beginners and children well, and ski schools operate throughout the season. Lift passes and ski rental are available directly in town. The ski season typically runs from December to mid-March, with snow cannons helping at either end.

A story
Winterberg is the site of one of the first mechanical ski lifts in Germany, installed in 1952. The Sauerland region's heavy snowfall — the Rothaargebirge mountains catch moisture coming off the Atlantic — makes it more reliably snowy than comparable hills further east. On a good year, the ski area operates for 100 days.
