Winterberg

Sauerland winter-sports town in western Germany, with ski slopes, hiking, mountain biking, and bobrun facilities.

Winterberg is the main winter sports town in the Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the closest thing to a ski resort you will find in western Germany's low mountains. The lifts of the Winterberg Ski Area start right in town, and while the slopes are modest by Alpine standards — the highest point is around 840 metres — they are more than enough for a weekend trip from the Ruhr cities or Cologne.

In summer, the area reinvents itself with mountain biking, hiking on the Rothaarsteig trail, and the Winterberg Bobrun that operates year-round. The town itself is small and pleasant, with a handful of hotels and restaurants clustered around the centre.

Getting There

Winterberg has a railway station on the Ruhr–Sieg line, with regular connections to Dortmund (about 2 hours) and Siegen (about 1 hour). In winter, Ski-Express trains run direct from Düsseldorf and Cologne on weekends.

By car, Winterberg is about 1.5 hours from Cologne and 1 hour from Dortmund via the A46 and B480. Driving is more flexible for reaching the outlying ski areas and trailheads. Parking in town can be tight during peak winter weekends.

Things to Do

Winterberg runs on two seasons: ski season from roughly December to March, and a busy summer season built around mountain biking and hiking. The ski area is the largest in western Germany, and for skiers based in the Ruhr Valley or Cologne, it's the most accessible mountain resort in the country. In summer, the trails that connect the lifts become mountain bike routes, and the Winterberg Bobrun operates year-round.
