Von der Heydt Museum

The Von der Heydt Museum is Wuppertal's main art museum, housed in a 19th-century building in the Elberfeld district. Its collection spans the 17th century through to modern German painting, with particular strength in 19th-century Romanticism and Impressionism. Works by Monet, Cézanne, and Renoir share the galleries with a strong representation of German painters who are less well known internationally but central to understanding the country's artistic tradition.

The museum is serious without being overwhelming, and the building itself is pleasant to move through. If you are spending a day in Wuppertal and want to balance the industrial character of the Schwebebahn and the city's valley streets with something quieter, this is the place. Allow two hours for a proper visit.
