The Felsenkirche is the reason Idar-Oberstein stays in the memory. The small late Gothic church is built into a natural niche in the cliff, with the houses of Oberstein below and castle ruins above.
It looks almost theatrical from town, but the approach is the best part: steps, stone lanes, and a tunnel through the rock. Inside, the church is quieter than its postcard image suggests, with the cliff pressing close around it.
