Marktplatz

Cochem's main square is a compact and handsome space surrounded by half-timbered buildings in various shades of cream, ochre, and terracotta. The Rathaus — the town hall — fronts the square with a broad Renaissance gable. Outdoor tables fill the square in summer and it becomes the de facto social centre of the old town, with cafes, a bistro, and a small winery all within a few metres of each other.

The Marktplatz is the obvious place to start exploring the old town. From here the main pedestrian lane runs uphill toward the castle, lined with wine shops, bakeries, and the side streets where the genuine weinstuben are found. In October the square hosts an autumn wine festival, and in December an Advent market fills the space with stalls and candlelight.
