Vineyard Walks

The Goldkupp and Zellerberg slopes above Mehring, best walked in harvest season

The vineyard slopes rising above Mehring on both sides of the Mosel are the main reason to come. The Goldkupp (Golden Crown) is the most celebrated vineyard, planted almost entirely with Riesling on slate and shell-limestone soils that give the wine its distinctive minerality. Walking up through the vines to the top of the ridge takes about 45 minutes from the village and rewards you with a panoramic view down the valley.

The Zellerberg and Blattenberg slopes are less famous but also walkable. Several local wine estates offer tastings — look for signs on the vineyard paths, or ask at the restaurant Landgasthaus Müller in the village. The walks are freely accessible year-round; the vines are at their most photogenic from late September to November.

A story
The Mosel is one of the steepest wine regions in the world — some of the slopes here reach 65 degrees. In the 19th century, every able-bodied person in the village would spend weeks each autumn carrying harvested grapes down the hillside on their backs in wooden tubs. Mechanisation has changed little on the steepest parcels, where tractors still cannot operate.
