Mehring

Quiet Mosel wine village near Schweich, known for Goldkupp, Zellerberg, and Blattenberg vineyards.

Mehring is a quiet wine village on the Mosel, about 25 minutes by car downriver from Schweich. It is not as famous as many other places along the Mosel, which is a shame — it is a very pleasant village, a good and affordable base for discovering the valley by hiking or biking. The setting is glorious Mosel scenery, and Trier and Luxembourg are within easy reach.

The village is renowned for its wines from the Goldkupp, Zellerberg and Blattenberg vineyards. On the last weekend in September the traditional Mehring wine festival takes place, with music, singing, dancing and games.

Eating Out

Mehring has limited dining options — this is a small village, not a tourist hub. The Landgasthaus Müller is the standout choice, combining a restaurant, butcher's shop, and wine production under one roof.

Things to Do

Mehring is a place to slow down. The main pursuits are walking the vineyards, cycling along the Mosel, and drinking wine. The Goldkupp, Zellerberg, and Blattenberg are the best-known vineyard slopes above the village, worth climbing for the views as much as the wine.

When to Go

The best time to visit Mehring is autumn (September–October), when the grape harvest is underway and the valley turns gold and red. The Mehring wine festival on the last weekend in September is the highlight of the village calendar: music, singing, and plenty of Riesling in the open air.

Summer is pleasant for cycling and swimming in the Mosel, and the river path from Mehring to Schweich is one of the easier stretches of the Mosel Radweg. Spring brings early warmth to the south-facing slopes. Winter is quiet — most restaurants and wine estates have reduced hours.
