Karl Marx was born in this modest Baroque townhouse on Brückenstrasse on 5 May 1818, the son of a successful lawyer. The house was owned by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and run as a museum since 1947. It is the most-visited museum in Trier.
The permanent exhibition covers Marx's life from his Trier childhood through his years in Paris, Brussels, London, and his death in 1883, with a strong focus on the intellectual development of his ideas. Original manuscripts, letters, and first editions are displayed alongside broader context about the industrial revolution and the European labour movement. The exhibition is thoughtful and not hagiographic — it engages with the controversies and the legacies. A 2018 renovation modernised the presentation significantly.
Address: Brückenstrasse 10, 54290 Trier. Open Tuesday to Sunday. Note that a large Karl Marx statue (gift from China, erected 2018) stands nearby at the end of Simeonstrasse.
