Scheibe-See

Reclaimed mining lake east of Hoyerswerda with a beach and 13-kilometre cycling loop

Scheibe-See is Hoyerswerda's local lake, part of the larger Lausitzer Seenland landscape where former open-cast mines have been flooded and reshaped for recreation. The west shore has the main beach area, and the lake's scale gives it a more open, big-sky feel than a simple town pond.

The best way to use it is by bicycle. A paved loop of about 13 kilometres circles the water, making Scheibe-See an easy half-day ride from Hoyerswerda and a good example of how this corner of Saxony is trying to turn mining scars into public space.
