Wernigerode sits in the northern Harz and makes an excellent base for day trips across the range. Quedlinburg, about 25 km east, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an outstanding collection of Romanesque buildings and a hilltop collegiate church. Goslar, 25 km north-west in Lower Saxony, is another beautifully preserved medieval town with its own UNESCO designation and the important Rammelsberg mine museum. The Brocken summit can be reached by steam train from Wernigerode station in about 90 minutes. Thale and the Rosstrappe, a dramatic rock outcrop above a gorge, are 20 km south-east and a classic Harz hiking destination.
