Café Wien is one of Wernigerode's most characteristic old-town establishments, housed in a half-timbered building at the heart of the pedestrian zone. The café serves coffee, cakes, pastries, and light lunches in a warm interior of exposed beams and traditional décor. The quality is reliable, the prices are reasonable, and the cakes — particularly the Harz specialities involving berries and cream — are the main reason to come.
The building itself is the attraction in miniature: at over 400 years old, it is one of the better-preserved half-timbered structures in the town. There is seating outside on the lane in summer, which fills up quickly on sunny afternoons. Good for a morning coffee break while walking the old town.
