Kaiserturm

Observation tower on the Armeleuteberg hill south of town

The Kaiserturm (Kaiser Tower) is an observation tower built in 1902 on the Armeleuteberg hill, about 2 km south of the Wernigerode town centre. The tower stands on a 478-metre summit and was erected to mark the completion of the Brocken railway. From the top, on clear days, you can see the Brocken to the south-west and the flatlands of Saxony-Anhalt stretching north.

The climb to the tower follows a forest path from the southern edge of the town and takes about 30–40 minutes from the Marktplatz — a pleasant half-day walk combined with a visit to the old town. The tower is open to visitors; the fee is modest. The hill itself is popular with local walkers year-round.
