The Museum für Luftfahrt und Technik (Museum for Aviation and Technology) is an aviation museum on the western edge of Wernigerode with a collection that focuses heavily on East German military and civilian aviation. The outdoor display includes a number of preserved aircraft from the National People's Army and Interflug, the GDR's state airline, making it particularly interesting for anyone curious about the hardware of the Cold War-era German Democratic Republic.
The museum is modestly sized but well maintained, and the combination of aircraft, vehicles, and technical equipment gives a reasonable picture of East German industrial capacity. It is most interesting for aviation enthusiasts and those with a specific interest in Cold War history. Allow about 90 minutes. The museum is on a secondary road at the edge of town; a car is the most practical way to get there.
