Wernigerode Castle sits on a wooded hill south of the town centre, visible from most of Wernigerode and reachable on foot via a steep but pleasant path through the forest. The current appearance — turrets, towers, and a dramatic silhouette — dates from an 1880s renovation in neo-Gothic style, though the site has been fortified since the 12th century. Inside, the castle is a museum with period-furnished rooms showing aristocratic life from the Middle Ages through the 19th century.
The views from the castle terrace over the old town and the Harz forests are the main draw — they are excellent in every direction. The museum itself is moderately interesting; allow 90 minutes for both. The walk up through the forest takes about 20 minutes from the Marktplatz; alternatively, a road car park is available. The castle restaurant has a pleasant terrace.
