Flensburger Brauerei

Flensburger Brauerei was founded in 1888 and is best known outside Germany for its distinctive swing-top (Bügelverschluss) bottles. The brewery occupies a large site in the southern part of the city centre and produces the pilsner that has become Flensburg's most exported cultural product. Brewery tours are available and take you through the production process, from malting to bottling.

The tour includes a tasting of the brewery's main products. Booking in advance is recommended during summer. The brewery shop sells the full range of Flensburger products as well as merchandise, and the swing-top bottles make practical souvenirs.

A story
The Bügelverschluss — the swing-top or flip-top bottle — is the defining feature of Flensburger beer and one of the most distinctive pieces of beverage packaging in Germany. The brewery has used it since 1888, when the design was chosen for its resealability. The satisfying pop of a Flensburger bottle being opened has been used in German advertising for decades, and the brewery claims the sound is so associated with their product that it has become part of German cultural memory. The brewery still fills around 50,000 bottles an hour by hand with the caps.
