Kiellinie

The Kiellinie is Kiel's waterfront promenade, running for about two kilometres along the western shore of the Kieler Förde from the inner harbour northward. It is the city's main outdoor social space — a broad path lined with chestnut trees, with benches and lawns dropping to the water's edge.

The walking and cycling path follows the shoreline closely, giving unobstructed views of the fjord and the ships moving through it. The Hindenburgufer quay at the southern end is where the large Stena Line and Color Line ferries berth before their overnight sailings to Gothenburg and Oslo — a spectacle in the early evening as these enormous vessels are loaded with cars and passengers. The marina beyond holds a dense concentration of sailing yachts, particularly during Kieler Woche.

The promenade is walkable in either direction from the city centre and connects naturally to the ferry landing, the harbour, and the start of the northern fjord path.
