Kunsthalle Kiel

The Kunsthalle Kiel is the city's main art museum, affiliated with Kiel University. The permanent collection focuses on German painting from the nineteenth century to the present, with strong holdings in North German Romanticism and German Expressionism — works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, and the painters associated with the Die Brücke movement feature prominently. The collection also includes French Impressionist works and a selection of contemporary German art.

The building, a late-nineteenth-century structure with later additions, sits in the university quarter a short walk from the main train station. Temporary exhibitions tend toward German and Scandinavian contemporary art. Opening hours and entry prices are standard for German regional art museums.
