Kieler Woche

Kieler Woche — Kiel Week — is the world's largest sailing regatta, held for ten days in late June. Around 5,000 boats from over 50 nations race on the Kieler Förde, watched by roughly one million visitors. The racing classes range from Olympic dinghies to offshore ocean racers, and the start lines and finish areas are visible from the shoreline promenades.

The sailing is only half of it. The city centre transforms into an open-air festival: the Rathausplatz and the harbour quays fill with stages, food stalls, and markets. Concerts run every evening across multiple venues, and the traditional parade of tall ships through the inner harbour is one of the most photographed events of the year.

If you are in Schleswig-Holstein in late June, Kiel during Kieler Woche is worth experiencing — the atmosphere is genuinely festive and the sailing is spectacular. Book accommodation well in advance; the city fills completely.

A story
The first Kieler Woche was held in 1882 with just eight yachts and the patronage of the German Kaiser, who used it to showcase imperial naval ambition as much as sporting competition. Kaiser Wilhelm II became a devoted participant, racing his own yachts and turning the event into an international social occasion. The 1936 Olympic sailing events were held here, cementing Kiel's reputation as a world sailing venue. Today, with around 5,000 boats and one million visitors over ten days, it is the world's largest sailing regatta.
