Haithabu (known in Old Norse as Hedeby) was one of the great trading centres of Viking-age Europe — at its peak in the 9th and 10th centuries it connected Scandinavia, the Frankish empire, and the Arab world. The museum displays the excavation finds with clarity and depth: jewellery, tools, ship parts, textiles, and the remains of the settlement itself. Outside, reconstructed longhouses sit on the original site, surrounded by an earthwork rampart that is still impressively intact. The museum is 4km south of Schleswig's old town, on the opposite shore of the Schlei — worth the short drive.
