Bachhaus

A dedicated museum to Johann Sebastian Bach, born in Eisenach in 1685. The permanent exhibition occupies rooms arranged as a 17th-century Thuringian household, with original instruments from Bach's period — including a clavichord, a lute-harpsichord, and various period keyboards — that are played live at regular demonstrations throughout the day.

The exhibits trace Bach's life from Eisenach through his posts at Arnstadt, Mühlhausen, Weimar, and Leipzig, with sheet music, portraits, and contextual material about Baroque musical culture. There is also a "walk-in music piece" installation using bars from the Christmas Oratorio. The museum is on the Frauenplan, a five-minute walk from the Marktplatz.

A story
Bach was born on 21 March 1685 in a house that no longer stands, but the Bachhaus museum nearby was for generations believed to be his birthplace. When it was established in the late 19th century that the original house was in fact demolished, the museum's trustees decided to keep the collection here regardless — which is why the most important Bach museum in the world is not actually the house where he was born.
