Automobilwelt Eisenach

A museum dedicated to Eisenach's long and surprising history as a centre of German car manufacturing. From the late 19th century through the end of the GDR, vehicles were built in Eisenach under a succession of different names — Wartburg, Dixi, BMW, EMW — and the museum traces this history with a well-preserved collection of cars spanning over a century.

The Dixi, the first BMW vehicle, was built here in 1928. In the GDR years, the Wartburg 311 and its successors were produced in vast numbers. The collection includes both the famous models and the obscure, and the juxtaposition of pre-war luxury cars with Cold War-era two-stroke saloons makes for an unexpectedly interesting display.
