Memorial and Education Centre Andreasstrasse

A former Stasi prison and remand centre, converted into a museum and memorial after German reunification. During the GDR period, this building on Andreasstrasse held political prisoners, dissidents, and anyone deemed an enemy of the state by the Ministry for State Security. Cells, interrogation rooms, and administrative spaces have been preserved and interpreted.

The museum covers Erfurt's role in the GDR system and the lives of those imprisoned here. It is sobering without being sensationalist, and the historical context — Erfurt had a significant dissident community — is carefully laid out. An important counterpart to the medieval monuments that dominate most visits to the city. Tours are available in English; the permanent exhibition is mostly in German with some English translation.
