Gera has a main railway station (Gera Hauptbahnhof) with connections to Jena, Erfurt, and Leipzig. Journey times are around 30 minutes to Jena, 50 minutes to Erfurt, and an hour to Leipzig. From Erfurt, where ICE high-speed trains stop, Gera is easily reached as a day trip or addition to a Thuringia itinerary.
By car, Gera sits on the A4 motorway corridor connecting Frankfurt and Dresden, with the A9 (Berlin–Munich) accessible via Jena. The drive from Leipzig takes about an hour; from Erfurt, 45 minutes.
