Otto-Dix-Haus

The Otto-Dix-Haus is a museum in the actual birth house of the painter at Mohrenplatz 4 in Gera's Untermhaus district. The building has been preserved as a biographical museum, with displays on Dix's early life, his education, and the social and artistic context of his career. It complements the Kunstmuseum's art-focused collection with a more personal and historical perspective.

The Untermhaus district itself is worth exploring. The neighbourhood retains a number of Jugendstil villas built by the prosperous textile merchants of late 19th-century Gera, and the streets have a somewhat faded elegance that is characteristic of many eastern German towns. The Otto-Dix-Haus is a short walk or tram ride from the city centre; the number 1 tram serves the area.
